Educational Support Options

Educational Support Options for Neurodivergent Learners & Children with Anxiety or Dyslexia.

Understanding Learning Differences

Every child learns in their own way. Children with neurodivergent profiles including ADHD, dyslexia, anxiety, processing challenges, or sensory differences benefit most from curriculum and school environments that are flexible, supportive, and tailored to how they think and process information.

This pamphlet explains two different educational approaches that families are using successfully: Harbor + Sprout curriculum (a flexible homeschool curriculum model) and Acellus Academy (an accredited online school with adaptive technology and structured support). Each offers unique features that can help your child thrive.

Harbor + Sprout Curriculum — Flexible, Neurodiversity-Friendly Learning

Harbor + Sprout is a nature-based, research-informed homeschool curriculum available for learners from early years up through older children with Supplemental Unit Studies that even older students can enjoy. This curriculum is popular with homeschooling families and can be a good fit for children who learn differently.

How It Works

  • Core Subjects Built for Individual Progress: Lessons in mathematics, language arts, and literature are designed with predictability, flexibility, and multiple learning styles in mind. Concepts are introduced gradually and reinforced through follow-up activities.
  • Levels Instead of Grades: Harbor + Sprout uses levels rather than strict grade labels, reducing pressure around being “behind.” This creates a gentler learning environment for children who may feel anxious about traditional grading.
  • Active Learning Components: Lessons include audio-visual-kinesthetic (AVK) activities so children who learn best by doing, seeing, or hearing can engage meaningfully.
  • Hands-On & Nature-Integrated: Especially effective for learners who need movement, sensory input, or contextual learning, the curriculum weaves play, nature, and exploration into academic lessons.

Benefits for Neurodivergent Learners

  • Flexible pacing allows students to take time on challenging areas without anxiety.
  • Multi-sensory instruction supports learners who thrive with varied input (visual, hands-on, auditory).
  • Choice and autonomy in how to complete tasks can reduce stress and increase confidence.
  • Open-ended and project-based units help learners with strong interests engage deeply, increasing motivation and joy in learning.

Parent Role

Harbor + Sprout relies on parent facilitation, so caregivers work alongside children and can adjust pacing, extensions, and supports based on each child’s needs.

Acellus Academy — Accredited Online School with Adaptive Instruction

Acellus Academy is a fully accredited online K–12 school program that offers structured courses while integrating adaptive learning technology. This makes it a solid option for families wanting a school-aligned curriculum with flexible pacing and support for diverse learners.

How It Works

  • Online Delivery: Students access lessons via a structured online platform that includes videos, interactive activities, and assessments.
  • Self-Paced Learning: Students work at their own pace, allowing extra time where needed and minimizing stress for learners who need slower progression.
  • Vectored Instruction®: This adaptive learning tool identifies gaps and provides targeted lessons so students can master concepts fully before advancing.
  • Comprehensive Curriculum: Covers core subjects like math, language arts, science, social studies, plus electives, STEM, social-emotional classes, and AP coursework for older students.

Supports for Neurodivergent Kids

  • Adaptive pathways help learners who struggle with traditional one-size-fits-all approaches.
  • Breaking lessons into focused video segments helps students with attention or processing challenges.
  • Positive reinforcement and achievement tools (like credits for completed work) can boost motivation and confidence, especially for students anxious about school tasks.
  • Social-Emotional Courses and Tools: These classes explicitly address emotional skills — beneficial for students with anxiety, stress, or social-emotional needs.
  • College & Career Pathways: For older students, honors and AP options prepare learners for future goals at a pace that fits their academic growth.

Parent & Home Integration

Parents can monitor progress, set goals, and support their child’s schedule. Because the program is online, it can be adapted to each family’s daily rhythm while still providing academic structure.

Tips for Choosing What’s Right for Your Child

Ask Yourself:

Does my child learn best with hands-on, flexible pacing, and parent-led support?

  • Harbor + Sprout may fit well.

Does my child benefit from structured courses with adaptive scaffolding and online delivery?

  • Acellus Academy may offer needed academic alignment and supports.

Consider:

  • Your child’s strengths and challenges (attention, reading fluency, sensory needs).
  • Your family’s schedule and support capacity (how much day-to-day involvement you plan to have).
  • State educational requirements — both can align to educational goals, but you should confirm alignment with South Carolina homeschooling or online school regulations if using them as your primary option.

Special Education Evaluations & Learning Best Assessments

Understanding How Your Child Learns Best

In addition to choosing the right curriculum, many families find it helpful to pursue a formal learning evaluation to better understand their child’s unique brain, strengths, and challenges. These evaluations can provide clarity, confidence, and direction when supporting neurodivergent learners or children struggling with anxiety, dyslexia, attention differences, or emotional regulation.

What Is a Learning Best Assessment?

A Learning Best Assessment is conducted by a Clinical Behavioral Scientist who is Board Certified in Brain Health. These assessments focus on how a child’s brain processes information rather than labeling a child by deficits alone.

Assessments may evaluate:

  • Learning styles and cognitive strengths
  • Attention, memory, and executive functioning
  • Emotional regulation and anxiety indicators
  • Reading, language, and processing patterns (including dyslexia markers)
  • Sensory preferences and environmental needs

The goal is to identify how your child learns best, not just where they struggle.

Benefits for Neurodivergent & Anxious Learners

  • Provides individualized insight that helps parents choose or adjust curriculum (such as Harbor + Sprout or Acellus Academy)
  • Helps reduce frustration by aligning instruction with the child’s brain-based needs
  • Supports advocacy when working with schools, homeschool associations, or educational programs
  • Encourages confidence and self-understanding in children by highlighting strengths alongside challenges

How This Supports Educational Planning

Results from a Learning Best Assessment can be used to:

  • Inform individualized learning plans
  • Adjust pacing, instructional methods, and environment
  • Guide accommodations and supports at home or in educational settings
  • Support special education considerations or documentation when appropriate

Accessible & Family-Centered Pricing

  • Pricing is based on a sliding scale, making evaluations more accessible to families
  • Costs are adjusted according to household income and individual needs
  • This ensures families can access high-quality, evidence-based evaluations without unnecessary financial stress

A Collaborative Approach

Parents receive a clear, easy-to-understand report and practical recommendations that can be immediately applied to:

  • Curriculum selection
  • Daily learning routines
  • Emotional and behavioral support strategies

This collaborative approach empowers families to make informed, confident decisions about their child’s education and overall well-being.
